    Family holiday home

    Family

Just to give you a brief background of Spring Cottage. It was recently purchased by our family who have for many decades yearned to return to Pembrokeshire where they lived for generations, up until the 1930s. It was with great sadness that much of the family had to move to London and the Home Counties in search of employment during the Great Recession. Even when the last cottage was sold by the family in 1982, the children who at the time were in their early teens, vowed to return to Pembrokeshire one day, and that’s exactly what we have done!

Our family were from the small hamlet of Caerfarchell, near the small port of Solva and village of Middlemill, and close to St Davids - the smallest city in the UK.

Spring Cottage has been a welcome return for us and we hope you will fall in love with it too.

    Walkers

    Near by walks

Walks: You will find no shortage of walks in Pembrokeshire. You will find a Ordnance Survey OS Land-ranger 157 in the cottage. There is also a pair of Binoculars for use. Please return after use for the next occupant to enjoy.

For quick walks you don't really have to plan and can’t “really” get lost..... :-)

    1. Drive to Whitesands beach. (see direction for beaches above). From the car park take the path on the right hand side towards the mountain (Carn Hen) You can either head towards the mountain or carry on the path and carry on on the Pembrokeshire Coastal path for as long as you like, well nearly... (Car parking & toilets)

    2. Drive to the sloop Porthgain (see pubs) from the harbor looking towards the sea you can follow the path right or left. Follow right and you'll be heading toward Trefin (about an hours walk) and you may come across the wild ponies. 2a. Follow the path left passed the old brickworks and you'll soon be heading towards Abereiddy its blue lagoon and black sands, either one of these walk should reward you with a well earned pint upon you return. (Car parking & toilets)

Strumble Head: ( see Gallery) Turn left out of the cottage and head towards Goodwick and follow directions towards Strumble Head. About five miles. You'll come across a working light house, but sadly you cant visit it, but if you follow the path left from the car park and there's a good chance you'll see a seal. (Car park, No toilets)

Note: Local taxis are great for dropping or picking you up after or before long walks and bike rides.
Many taxis companies have six and seven seater people carriers.

    History

    History of Spring Cottage

As far as we know from speaking to locals from the village of St Nicholas (‘Tremarchog’ in Welsh) a dwelling has been on this site since the sixth century, used as accommodation for travellers to St Nicholas’ church (which can be seen from the upstairs back windows). These travellers were in turn on a visit to the monastery and later on a pilgrimage to the eleventh century St David’s cathedral.

Based on architectural appearance we believe that the main building of the cottage would have been built circa 1820. In the garden you will also see the outline of an original building next to the fountain. The earliest image we have of the cottage is from the 1900s and shows what looks like an Edwardian postman standing outside it with St Nicholas’ church in the background. The chapel is also in the photograph and a girl is leaning on a wall in the foreground.

The other image features the cottages opposite and shows more of the Chapel (see next page).
By the mid 1980s the cottage was in a state of disrepair. It was deemed unfit for human habitation and almost condemned to be demolished by the council. It was thanks to the vision of a local builder that Spring Cottage was saved from its impending fate, and so began its reconstruction. In the early 2000s the small garage at the side (which can be seen in the previous pictures) was demolished and a double garage built alongside a large kitchen extension which wraps around the original side wall.

    Ffyst Samson (aka Trellys Cromlech)

    (SM 9059 3492)

A much damaged chambered tomb Ffyst Samsom is just off the foot path near Spring cottage, but not visiable from the road. Turn right out of the cottage and walk about 10-15mins towards the A487 St Davids Road. Until you come to a modern barn on the right hand side.

a few meters after that you will see a foot path on your left hand side.

The Stones are beyond the small hill (see pic below). Please dont walk straight across the field, it has crops growing, but follow the headge on the right hand side until you come to a gate. go through that, and head for the hill. The magic is just behind it.

Tip: take wellies.... if raining or winter.

As well as the Neolithic monument and rock outcrop, there are fantastic views of the Pembrokeshire coast.
